GUN SAFETY RULES

These rules of gun safety provided by the
National Rifle Association

  • Always point the muzzle in a safe direction.

  • Always keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.

  • Always keep the firearm unloaded until ready to use.

  • Know how the gun operates.

  • Be sure your gun and ammunition are compatible.

  • Carry only one gauge/caliber of ammunition when shooting.

  • Be sure of your target - and what's beyond.

  • Wear eye and ear protection as appropriate.

  • Don't mix alcohol or drugs with shooting.

  • Be aware that circumstances my require additional rules unique to a particular situation.

  • Keep guns and ammunition properly stored and inaccessible to unauthorized users, especially children.
  • Teach children the NRA Eddie Eagle program: If you see a firearm: (1) Stop! (2) Don't touch. (3) Leave the area. (4) Tell an adult.

HUNTER SAFETY RULES

These rules of hunter safety provided by the
Massachusetts Division of Law Enforcement
Hunter Education Bureau

  • Treat every gun as if it were loaded at all times.

  • Keep muzzles pointed in a safe direction at all times.

  • Carry guns safely.

  • Keep your safety on until ready to shoot.

  • Unload guns when not in use.

  • Take down guns or have actions open when not hunting or shooting.

  • Guns should be carried in cases to and from the shooting area.

  • Make sure your gun barrel is free from obstructions.

  • Only carry ammunition of the proper size for the gun you are carrying.

  • Be sure of your target before pulling the trigger.

  • Know the identifying features of the game you are hunting.

  • Never point a gun at anything you do not intend to shoot.

  • Avoid all horseplay.

  • Never climb a tree, or fence or jump a ditch with a loaded gun.

  • Never pull a gun toward you by the muzzle.

  • Never shoot at a hard flat surface or water.

  • At target practice (or any time) be sure of your backstop.

  • Store guns and ammunition separately.

  • Keep guns and ammunition out of the reach of children.

  • Avoid alcohol or drugs before or during shooting.
