No Eye-Rolls · No Rush · Since 1994Massachusetts rules are their own animal — and we know them cold. Here's the honest roadmap from “I’m thinking about it” to walking out of our shop with your first firearm, done completely legally.
Massachusetts requires a state-approved basic firearms safety course before you can apply for a license. Courses run a few hours and are taught by Massachusetts State Police certified instructors all over the area. Ask at the counter — we keep a current list of certified instructors we trust, from one-on-one teachers to programs at local clubs.
With your safety certificate, you apply through the licensing officer at your local police department. The two licenses you'll hear about:
Each department runs its own process and timeline, so apply early and be patient.
This is the part we've been doing since 1994. Massachusetts handgun sales must satisfy both the state's Approved Firearms Roster and the Attorney General's Consumer Protection regulations (940 CMR 16.00) — which is why some pistols you see online can't be sold new here. You don't have to memorize any of it: everything in our shop is MA compliant or properly exempt, and we'll tell you plainly why one model is on our shelf and another isn't. New handguns also come with the AG's required safety disclosures and an approved lock — all part of the purchase, handled at the counter.
Every new shooter gets this from us either way, so here it is in writing (courtesy of the NRA's rules of gun safety):
A License to Carry (LTC) for handguns, or an LTC/FID card for rifles and shotguns. Both require a state-approved basic firearms safety course first, then an application through your local police department.
Ask at the counter — we keep a current list of Massachusetts State Police certified instructors we trust, from private instruction to courses at local sportsmen's clubs.
New handguns sold by MA dealers must be on the state's Approved Firearms Roster AND comply with the Attorney General's Consumer Protection regulations. Some popular models don't meet both, so they can't be sold new here. Everything in our shop is compliant or properly exempt — we'll explain any specific model plainly.
Yes — you must present a valid Massachusetts license every time you purchase ammunition, no exceptions. Ammunition is sold in-store only; state law prohibits shipping it to a MA resident's home.
No. First-time buyers are a big part of what we do, and we take the time to make your first purchase simple and legal — no eye-rolls, no rush. Plenty of folks' first stop is just a conversation, and Sophie the shop dog greets everyone the same.
Massachusetts requires firearms be stored securely locked. We stock safes, lock boxes and trigger locks, and we'll show you options that fit your situation when you buy.
That's most of our day, honestly. Call or stop in — a real person answers, and Sophie greets everyone the same.
